Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth was on August 24 on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love the arts from her grandmother Denise. DuVernay worked as night nurses to afford her aunt to have the time she needed during her day time to enjoy the pleasures of art, literature, as well as theatre. DuVernay immediately fell in love with that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay saw how art was a powerful tool to promote activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially conscious from her mother. Although DuVernay lived in Compton with her parents, she was a summer resident living in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the Civil Rights Movement's historic march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there would later inspire her to direct a movie about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and earned qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was still at university. Her first job was as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to look at the trash of the home of a juror. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided not to continue in journalism, she moved on into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist right after college. In 1999, she launched her own company of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
